CM-15

About

Teenage Engineering developed the CM-15 to resolve an inherent tension in field recording: professional-grade audio capture typically requires equipment too bulky for spontaneous use. Their solution packages a one-inch electret condenser capsule, the same diaphragm diameter found in studio vocal microphones, inside an aluminum housing barely larger than a payment terminal.

The capsule floats on internal rubber suspension, isolating it from handling vibration that would otherwise contaminate recordings. This mounting system allows handheld operation without the rumble and thump that plagues rigidly mounted microphones. The pickup pattern is super-cardioid, a polar response that concentrates sensitivity in a forward-facing lobe while rejecting sound arriving from the sides and rear. For dialogue recording, this directionality isolates speakers from ambient noise. For music, it captures intended sources while minimizing room reflections.

Surface treatment uses bead blasting, a process that creates a uniform matte texture across the aluminum shell. This finish resists fingerprints and scratches while providing secure grip. The aesthetic aligns with Teenage Engineering's broader Field series, industrial forms rendered in neutral colors that photograph well without distracting from the recording subject.

What emerges is a microphone for creators who need broadcast-quality audio without committing to a dedicated recording rig. The CM-15 fits in a jacket pocket, sets up instantly, and captures sound that previously required far larger investment in equipment and expertise.
