Diffrient Smart

Humanscale commissioned designer Niels Diffrient to create a task chair that eliminated the complexity plaguing ergonomic seating. The result abandons the multi-lever adjustment systems found on competing products in favor of automatic response to each user's body. Weight-sensitive recline activates the moment you lean back, providing resistance proportional to your mass without requiring calibration. Sit down and the chair simply works.

The backrest employs a proprietary mesh material stretched across a minimal frame. This membrane conforms to spinal curvature while allowing air circulation, addressing the heat buildup that plagues foam-backed alternatives during extended sitting. The tension remains consistent from lumbar region through shoulder blades, supporting natural posture without forcing rigid positioning.

Seat construction offers two approaches. The mesh option continues the breathability philosophy throughout, while upholstered variants layer resilient foam beneath textile coverings selected for durability and tactile comfort. Both maintain the chair's slim profile, which occupies less visual space than bulkier ergonomic designs while supporting users through full workdays.

Armrests pivot and adjust in height, accommodating varied desk heights and typing positions. The base rolls smoothly on five casters sized for carpet or hard flooring. The overall impression prioritizes refinement over mechanical complexity, producing a chair that appears almost conventional until the quality of its support becomes apparent during use.
