Doric Lamp 01

About

Kismas collaborated with Spanish architect Rafael Moneo to produce this lamp that exists at the intersection of lighting design and sculptural art. Moneo, whose built works include museums, cathedrals, and cultural institutions across multiple continents, brought architectural sensibility to an object scaled for domestic interiors. The result transcends typical table lamp conventions.

The structure divides into two components with distinct material identities. The base consists of powder-coated steel, minimal in form and finished in matte tones that recede visually while providing stable grounding. This metal foundation houses the light source, directing illumination upward into the defining element above.

That upper portion is a three-dimensional glass block featuring relief patterns inspired by classical Doric columns. The geometry references ancient architectural orders while employing contemporary casting techniques that achieve crisp detail and consistent optical properties. When lit, the glass transforms into a glowing volume where surface textures modulate light intensity across their contours. Shadows and highlights interact across the relief, creating depth that changes with viewing angle.

The lamp functions practically, providing ambient illumination suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, or studies. Yet its primary contribution may be atmospheric rather than functional, introducing warm light filtered through artisanal glass in a form that invites contemplation. The proportions remain domestic in scale while the material quality and design pedigree suggest objects found in gallery collections.

For interiors where lighting serves aesthetic as well as practical purposes, this piece delivers both. It introduces presence without demanding attention, glowing quietly while contributing to the character of its surroundings.
