Dyson OnTrac Headphones

About

Dyson approached headphone design with the acoustical and mechanical engineering perspective that characterizes their appliance work. The OnTrac represents their entry into personal audio, bringing proprietary motor technology expertise to driver development while applying materials science knowledge to comfort and durability challenges.

The ear cushions employ soft microfiber exteriors in carefully selected colorways that complement various personal styles. Beneath this surface layer, open-cell foam with high rebound properties conforms to the contours around each ear while recovering shape between sessions. An air seal around the cushion perimeter isolates the listening environment from external noise, creating the acoustic foundation that allows the active noise cancellation system to function effectively.

Structural components demonstrate precision manufacturing standards. Ear cups are machined from aluminum billets rather than cast or stamped, achieving dimensional accuracy that ensures consistent acoustic chambers across production units. This metalwork provides rigidity while managing weight, as aluminum offers favorable strength-to-mass ratios compared to plastic alternatives.

Battery placement follows an unconventional strategy. Rather than loading cells into the ear cups where they add rotational mass against your head, Dyson positioned power storage within the headband arc above. This distribution reduces the sensation of weight bearing down while maintaining a slim cup profile. The headband itself curves to contact your head across a broad surface area, dispersing pressure rather than concentrating it at single points.

Dual-pivot mechanisms allow each cup to rotate and tilt independently, accommodating the asymmetries inherent in human head shapes. Combined with carefully calibrated clamp force, these articulation points enable extended listening sessions without the hotspots or headaches that plague less ergonomically resolved designs.
