Peter Opsvik approached seating design with a fundamental question: why should sitting mean stillness? His answer, developed for Norwegian manufacturer Flokk, became the Capisco, a chair that encourages constant subtle movement rather than enforcing a single correct posture. The 8106 variant represents the core expression of this philosophy, featuring the distinctive saddle seat and sculptural backrest that have made this model recognizable in design-conscious workspaces worldwide.
The seat geometry borrows from equestrian saddles, curving downward at the front to open the hip angle and promote a more upright pelvis position. This arrangement engages core musculature and reduces the spinal compression associated with conventional flat seats. Equally important, the shape invites varied sitting positions: forward-facing, sideways, even reversed with arms resting on the backrest. The body finds new orientations throughout the day rather than settling into static compression.
An inBalance mechanism beneath the seat responds to weight shifts with smooth, progressive resistance, allowing gentle rocking and tilting without manual adjustment. Seat height extends from low positions suitable for traditional desks up to elevated perches that pair with standing-height surfaces, making the Capisco genuinely adaptable across workspace configurations. The backrest adjusts independently in both height and depth, accommodating different torso lengths and sitting preferences.
Flokk manufactures the 8106 with environmental consideration at every stage. Nearly half the chair's materials derive from recycled sources, and the production process maintains a low carbon footprint relative to conventional office seating. The five-star aluminum base provides stability while accepting various caster types for different flooring surfaces. Available finishes integrate with diverse aesthetic environments from minimal Scandinavian studios to warmer residential offices.
