Aeron Chair
About
When Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick designed the original Aeron in 1994, they challenged fundamental assumptions about what an office chair should be. Rather than foam cushions wrapped in fabric, they proposed a suspension system that would support the body while allowing air circulation. The current Aeron refines those principles with updated materials, improved adjustability, and manufacturing advances accumulated over three decades of production and research.
The chair's most distinctive feature remains its Pellicle mesh, a woven elastomer material that conforms to individual body contours while dissipating heat and moisture. This suspension system eliminates the pressure points created by traditional cushioning, providing support that remains consistent whether sitting for twenty minutes or eight hours. The mesh spans both seat and backrest, creating a unified surface that moves with the occupant rather than resisting natural position shifts.
PostureFit SL technology addresses lumbar and sacral support through adjustable pads that stabilize the base of the spine, encouraging the pelvis to tilt forward slightly and maintain the natural S-curve that reduces lower back strain. Armrests adjust in height, width, depth, and pivot angle, accommodating varied body proportions and work activities. Tilt tension and recline range respond to individual preference, allowing both upright focus positions and leaned-back thinking postures.
Herman Miller manufactures the Aeron in three sizes to properly fit different body types, recognizing that ergonomic support requires proportional dimensions rather than universal sizing. The chair carries a twelve-year warranty reflecting expected service life and the company's commitment to repairability over replacement. For those who spend significant hours seated at a desk, the Aeron represents a considered investment in physical comfort and long-term musculoskeletal health. Its continued presence in studios, offices, and homes worldwide testifies to a design that has proven its worth across changing work patterns and aesthetic trends.
