When Apple introduced the Magic Keyboard for iPad, it represented a fundamental rethinking of what a tablet accessory could accomplish. Rather than merely providing keys, the design transforms the iPad into something approaching laptop functionality while preserving the tablet's essential character. The engineering required to achieve this balancing act reveals itself in numerous subtle details.
The cantilever hinge mechanism suspends the iPad above the keyboard deck, creating a floating appearance that distinguishes the assembly from conventional laptop forms. Dual torque hinges provide smooth angle adjustment across a useful range while maintaining firm positioning at any selected angle. This suspension also elevates the display closer to eye level, improving posture during extended work sessions.
Beneath the anodized aluminum surface lies a scissor-switch keyboard offering approximately 1mm of travel. The lower portion houses a glass trackpad with haptic feedback technology. Multi-touch gestures familiar from Mac trackpads translate directly, enabling cursor control and navigation without lifting hands from the keyboard.
A USB-C pass-through port occupies the hinge spine, permitting charging while the iPad's own port remains accessible for accessories.
