Measure Collection
About
Grovemade reconsidered the basic measuring tools found in studios, workshops, and offices, questioning whether instruments so fundamental to creative work deserved better material treatment. The resulting collection includes a ruler, protractor, and triangle, each machined from solid aluminum billet stock rather than stamped from sheet metal or molded from plastic.
The manufacturing process begins with raw material blocks cut to approximate dimension, then shaped through CNC machining that achieves tolerances appropriate for accurate measurement. Laser etching applies the calibration marks, producing crisp lines that resist wear and remain legible through years of handling. This etching penetrates the surface rather than sitting atop it as printed markings would, ensuring the scales outlast the inevitable scratches and scuffs of workshop use.
Aluminum as a material choice delivers heft that plastic cannot approach. Each tool stays put during use rather than shifting under straightedge pressure or pencil contact. The weight also communicates quality immediately upon handling, establishing that these objects were made with care rather than extruded for disposability.
Surface finishing receives considered attention. The aluminum carries a treatment that resists fingerprints and provides subtle texture without sacrificing the material's natural character. Edges are softened enough to feel comfortable in hand while maintaining the sharpness necessary for precise line work.
As a collection, the pieces share a visual language that produces coherence when stored together or displayed in workspaces where tools remain visible between projects. The geometry derives from function rather than decoration, yet the resulting forms achieve aesthetic appeal through their honest proportions and material quality. For practitioners who spend substantial time measuring, marking, and drawing, these tools elevate mundane tasks while serving the underlying purpose with precision.
