North

About

Fractal Design conceived the North as a departure from the aggressive aesthetics that dominate PC enclosures, replacing RGB strips and tempered glass with materials typically found in furniture: real walnut panels, brass accents, and a form factor that resembles a credenza more than a computer case. The design acknowledges that high-performance systems increasingly occupy living spaces and home offices where visual integration matters.

The XL Charcoal Black variant accommodates E-ATX, ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX motherboards within a spacious interior that supports graphics cards up to 413mm in length and front-mounted radiators up to 420mm for custom liquid cooling. Three pre-installed 140mm Aspect PWM fans establish baseline airflow, while mesh intake panels and accessible dust filters maintain thermal performance without requiring constant maintenance.

Construction emphasizes practical ownership alongside initial assembly. Tool-less side and top panels reduce friction for upgrades and cleaning, while generous cable management space behind the motherboard tray keeps the interior tidy even with complex builds. The chassis itself provides rigidity that dampens vibration and supports substantial component weight.

What distinguishes the North from other premium cases is the conviction that computer hardware deserves the same design consideration as other objects in a home. The walnut front panel develops character over time, the brass accents patina with age, and the overall presence contributes to rather than detracts from interior environments. For builders who rejected PC aesthetics as necessary compromise, this case offers reconciliation between performance requirements and visual standards.
