Nuage Vase

About

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec approach the vase not as a container but as a structural proposition. The Nuage takes an extruded silhouette and divides it into parallel channels, creating multiple openings that can hold stems independently or in coordinated arrangements. This segmentation transforms flower arrangement from a singular gesture into an exercise in composition, where each channel offers its own vertical slot for placement.

The form itself draws from architectural vocabulary. Repeated vertical elements create rhythm along the profile, while the overall shape suggests urban skyline or organ pipe more readily than traditional vessel. Yet the scale remains domestic, appropriate for tabletop or shelf placement. Vitra produces the Nuage in several finishes and sizes, allowing the piece to integrate with varied interior palettes and proportional contexts.

Empty, the vase functions as sculpture, its shadow play shifting throughout the day as light angles change. The channels cast linear patterns on adjacent surfaces, introducing graphic interest without requiring botanical content. Filled, the piece becomes an armature for controlled arrangements, preventing the common problem of stems bunching together at the center. Each flower or branch occupies its own territory, maintaining visual clarity and allowing individual specimens to be appreciated rather than lost in a mass.

The Nuage belongs to a category of objects that blur the distinction between art and utility, designed to perform a function while remaining visually compelling in its dormant state. It rewards both use and contemplation.
