Plissé Toaster
About
Michele De Lucchi extended the Plissé design vocabulary to breakfast preparation with this two-slice toaster, maintaining the pleated thermoplastic construction that unifies the collection. The vertical folds create shadow patterns that animate the surface throughout morning light conditions, transforming static appliance presence into something more visually engaging.
The two-slot configuration handles standard bread dimensions with mechanical precision, lowering and raising slices consistently through spring-loaded carriage mechanisms. Temperature control allows adjustment across browning preferences, from barely warmed to deeply toasted. The heating elements distribute energy evenly, avoiding the striped patterns that indicate uneven exposure in lesser toasters.
Alessi integrated cord management into the base design, allowing excess cable to wrap internally rather than snaking across countertops. This detail reflects understanding that kitchen surfaces serve multiple purposes and that appliances should minimize their footprint when not actively operating.
The thermoplastic resin body resists heat transfer effectively, remaining cool to external touch during toasting cycles while protecting interior components. The black finish available on this model recedes into kitchen backgrounds, allowing the sculptural form to register without demanding chromatic attention.
De Lucchi brought architectural consideration to an appliance category often neglected by serious designers, demonstrating that morning rituals can involve objects worth regarding rather than merely using. The Plissé toaster functions reliably while contributing visual quality to spaces where people begin their days.
