Eight Sleep developed the Pod 5 Core to retrofit existing mattresses with thermal regulation and biometric monitoring, avoiding the replacement cost of integrated smart mattresses while delivering comparable functionality. The system comprises a one-inch cover layer containing the active elements and a bedside Hub unit that manages water circulation and data processing.
Temperature control operates independently for each side of the bed, accommodating partners with different thermal preferences. The range spans cooling and warming capabilities throughout the night, with the Autopilot feature adjusting automatically based on detected sleep stages. This dynamic response addresses the common problem of overheating during deep sleep or feeling cold during lighter phases.
Clinical-grade sensors embedded in the cover track heart rate variability and resting heart rate continuously, generating data that informs both immediate comfort adjustments and longer-term sleep quality insights. The metrics reach laboratory standards without requiring wearable devices that disrupt sleep or create data gaps during unconscious removal.
Morning wake functionality employs gentle thermal changes and vibration rather than jarring audio alarms, timing activation to coincide with lighter sleep phases when awakening produces less grogginess. Physical buttons on the Hub enable temperature adjustments without smartphone interaction, respecting the bedroom environment's need for reduced screen exposure.
