Ridge Vase
About
Vases occupy an unusual position in domestic objects. They must function as vessels for organic material while existing independently as sculptural presences during the intervals between arrangements. Muuto designed the Ridge to excel in both roles, creating a form that commands attention whether holding flowers or standing empty.
The defining element is the vertical indentation running the height of the piece, a concave channel that transforms simple cylindrical geometry into something more complex. This ridge serves multiple purposes beyond visual interest. It provides a natural grip point for lifting and repositioning, eliminating the uncertainty of handling smooth ceramic surfaces. Within the vessel, it creates a spine against which stems can rest, helping arrangements maintain their intended composition rather than splaying outward or collapsing into disordered masses.
Construction employs earthenware, a ceramic material prized for its substantial presence and the warmth it brings compared to porcelain or glass alternatives. The exterior retains a raw, unglazed finish that invites touch, its matte surface absorbing light rather than reflecting it. Interior glazing ensures water resistance and easy cleaning while remaining hidden during normal display. The contrast between these two surface treatments creates tactile interest that photographs cannot fully convey.
Standing 48.5 centimeters tall, this is a floor vase sized for substantial stems and branches rather than delicate table arrangements. The height commands attention in room corners, beside furniture, or as entry hall statements. Yet the restrained color palette and clean geometry prevent the piece from overwhelming its surroundings, achieving the difficult balance between presence and integration that characterizes successful Scandinavian design.
