Sailing Lantern
About
The collaboration between Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio and BALMUDA produces a lighting instrument that references maritime tradition while incorporating contemporary refinement at every point of contact. The lens housing employs precision-ground glass of the quality typically reserved for optical equipment, shaped to distribute illumination evenly and secured by a gold-finished guard that protects the most vulnerable component. Stainless steel forms the structural body, polished to a mirror finish that reflects surrounding environments and requires the surface perfection only achievable through meticulous attention during manufacturing.
A single rotary dial governs both intensity and color temperature, progressing from cool illumination suited to task work through warm tones that approximate candlelight ambiance. This analog control provides the satisfying physical feedback that touchscreens cannot replicate, with resistance calibrated to prevent accidental adjustment while permitting fine-tuning. Twin LEDs powered by an internal rechargeable battery produce the actual light, solid-state technology delivering the reliability and longevity that incandescent alternatives sacrificed.
The carrying lanyard employs textured polyester selected for its resistance to salt, sunlight, and oils, the environmental exposures that degrade ordinary materials aboard vessels or in outdoor settings. The attachment button resists corrosion, ensuring the lanyard connection remains secure through seasons of handling. At 3.4 pounds, the lantern carries genuine heft that communicates quality upon lifting. The entire assembly can be disassembled for cleaning, repair, or eventual recycling, a considered approach to longevity that acknowledges objects should be maintained rather than replaced.
Limited to one thousand pieces worldwide, the Sailing Lantern positions itself within a tradition of numbered editions that acknowledge collectors and enthusiasts willing to invest in objects of exceptional craft. The proportions reference classic nautical equipment and Fresnel lighthouse lamps while maintaining domestic scale appropriate for bedside tables, dining surfaces, or evening gatherings in outdoor spaces.
