Snoopy
About
Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni drew from their characteristic wit and material intelligence when creating this table lamp for Flos. Named for its profile's passing resemblance to a cartoon beagle, the Snoopy transcends its playful title through serious design consideration and premium execution.
The upper element employs painted die-cast aluminum and enameled glass to form a tilting reflector that directs illumination downward. This indirect approach produces warm, focused light suitable for reading or concentrated work while eliminating the harsh glare of exposed bulbs. The reflector pivots to adjust the light pool's position, adding functional flexibility to sculptural presence.
Below, a block of genuine Carrara marble provides visual and physical grounding. The stone's mass anchors the lamp firmly while its white surface creates material dialogue with the reflector above. This juxtaposition of smooth curves and solid geometry, lightweight appearance and substantial heft, captures the Castiglioni approach: objects should engage multiple senses and invite interaction beyond mere function.
On desks, consoles, or sideboards, the Snoopy commands attention through its silhouette alone, even before illumination enters the equation. When lit, it transforms surrounding space with controlled warmth that enhances evening atmosphere without overwhelming. The design has remained in continuous production since 1967, its endurance confirming initial instincts about proportion, material selection, and the lasting appeal of thoughtful irreverence in domestic lighting.
