The Midland
About
Keys require a home, and for decades that home has been the split ring: a functional spiral of wire that resists elegance despite countless attempts at improvement. The James Brand took a different approach with The Midland, recognizing that a carabiner could serve as both attachment point and aesthetic object if designed with sufficient care.
Available in stainless steel or anodized aluminum, The Midland offers two material philosophies. Stainless provides heft and permanence, developing a subtle sheen through handling that speaks to longevity. Aluminum reduces weight while accepting color through anodization, allowing coordination with other carry items. Both versions share identical geometry: proportions calibrated for visual balance, edges softened to eliminate snag points, and a gate mechanism engineered for smooth, positive action.
The carabiner form inherently suggests outdoor utility, but The Midland reads differently. Its refinement signals intention rather than ruggedness. The machining process leaves surfaces that invite touch, and the overall scale fits comfortably in the palm without overwhelming pocket space. The gate opens with sufficient resistance to prevent accidental release yet yields readily to deliberate pressure.
Attachment points include belt loops, bag hardware, and zipper pulls. Keys cluster at one end while the clip secures to clothing or equipment at the other, keeping essentials accessible without the digging and jingling of loose pocket carry. For those who have reduced their keychain to essentials, The Midland provides an anchor point that elevates rather than diminishes the curated collection.
